What is a 24 hour Blood pressure monitor?

24 Hour blood pressure monitor is a portable blood pressure machine that monitors your blood pressure over a 24 hour period. It will typically record your blood pressure every 30 minutes while you are awake and every 60 minutes while asleep.

Are there any risks to this procedure?

There are no serious risks with the procedure. You may be aware of the cuff inflating which can  disrupt your sleep.

Are there any limitations to 24 hour blood pressure monitoring?

Occasionally, the cuff can fail to measure blood pressure at various time points particularly if the cords of the cuff are tangled.

Why do I need a 24 hour blood pressure monitor?

A 24 hour blood pressure monitor can help assess:

  • If you truly have elevated blood pressure (hypertension). Many people have elevated levels when they visit the doctor and the 24 hour monitor can determine if levels are elevated when doing your normal day to day activities.
  • If blood pressure is elevated when asleep, which may indicate the need for treatment even when your levels are good in the daytime.
  • To check how effective blood pressure pills that you are taking are
How to prepare?
  • The monitor is worn around your upper arm (usually right but sometimes left arm)
  • Wear a shirt that can easily be removed.

If you are taking any medications, please bring them with you.

How long is the test?

It will take approximately 20 minutes for the Blood pressure monitor to be fitted on the first day and  5-10 minutes to remove the monitor on the second day.

When will I get my results?

It may take up to a week to analyse the results. Your results will then be discussed with you by your doctor.
