24 Hour Holter Monitor

Westmead Private Cardiology offer
the 24 Hour Holter monitoring services in clinic:

What is a Holter monitor?

A Holter monitor is a portable electrocardiogram (ECG) that monitors your heart rhythm over a 24 hour period. It is used to assess your heart rate and rhythm.

Are there any risks to this procedure?

There are no major risks with this procedure though if several leads become dislodged, it may not be possible to obtain sufficient information and the procedure may need to be repeated. The ECG dots can occasionally cause irritation on the skin which may take a few days to resolve.

Are there any limitations to a Holter monitoring?

If the Holter monitor is performed for a particular symptom (e.g. palpitations, dizziness), the monitor may not be able to determine the cause if symptoms do not occur on the day you wear the monitor.

Why do I need a Holter Monitor?

A Holter monitor can help assess:

  • fast and slow abnormal rhythms that may be causing symptoms that have been occurring on most days (e.g. dizziness, palpitations)
  • to assess the success of treatment (e.g. medications or cardiac ablation).
    How to prepare?
    • The monitor is worn under your clothes, attached to the skin with sticky electrodes.
    • Wear a shirt that can easily be removed.
    • Wear a comfortable bra
    • Have a shower or bath prior to wearing the monitor as you will not be able to shower during the 24 hours that the monitor is worn
    • Avoid electromagnetic fields during the 24 hour period you wear the monitor as it may interfere with the results (e.g. metal detectors, MRI machines, TENS machines)

If you are taking any medications, please bring them with you.

    How long is the test?

It will take approximately 20 minutes for the Holter monitor to be fitted on the first day and 10 minutes to remove the monitor on the second day. The monitor. is worn for 24 hours.

When will I get my results?
Your results will be discussed with you by your doctor after your test is complete.
