Pacemaker and Defibrillator Checks
Westmead Private Cardiology offer
Pacemaker and Defibrillator checks in clinic:
What is a Pacemaker and Defibrillator check?
A maget is placed over the pacemaker or defibrillator to allow a computer to read the information from your device. The information obtained includes information ensuring the device is working properly, if any abnormal rhythms have occured and also how long the battery life is remaining. Occasionally, the cardiologist or pacemaker technician may make adjustments to allow the device to function in an improved manner.
Are there any risks to this procedure?
There are no serious risks with the procedure. If adjustments are made, they occasionally can make you feel worse rather than better. Any adjustments that are made after a discussion with you.
Why do I need a pacemaker or defibrillator check?
Most new pacemakers and defibrillators can be monitored remotely from home. A periodic check at the pacemaker clinic or cardiologist’s office is still needed to ensure the device continues to work appropriately and safely.
How to prepare?
If you have a card provided to you when you had your pacemaker/defibrillator implanted, please bring this with you to your appointment.
How long is the test?
it will take approximately 5-20 minutes for the check (longer if there are complex issues that need to be addressed).
When will I get my results?
Your results will be discussed with you by your doctor after your test is complete.
